My Personal favorite Cajun book is Meely LaBauve by Ken Wells.
Ken Wells has two other books in the series, "Jr's Leg" which is book 2
in the series and then "Logan's Storm" that is out. I will review this book as soon as I finish it! Please feel free to email me your opinions on any Cajun books!
These books are written by a man who grew up around Houma, Louisiana and knows
'bout dem gators and such! Fun and a great read!
I just finished "Jr's Leg" and was delighted in the quick pace that this book moves! I couldn't put it down. I wouldn't call it a light read, but a thoughtful and provoking look at many issues that relate to both the Cajun way of life and racial issues that have plagued many areas of our country. This book also caries a theme of redemption that is uplifting, although Jr. wouldn't like me saying that. A good read and I personally feel that Ken Well's books just get better and better. <
"The Scandalous Summer of Sissy LeBlanc" by Loraine Despres is just what you would expect. A Scandalous little read. Perfect if you are looking for something light. Speaking as a southern woman, I just love the Southern Belle's Handbook..you'll just have to read the book to find out why.
If you are looking for an easy read to explain to you what are Acadians?
How did Acadians become Cajuns, and other questions, I recommend "Scattered to
the Wind" Dispersal and Wanderings of the Acadians, 1755-1809 by Dr. Carl A. Brasseaux.
This paperback book with only 84 pages is an easy read to get the basic idea of
the Acadian Story.
"No Place, Louisiana" by Martin Pousson
This book falls close to my heart. A well written and descriptive novel
It strips away the colorful image of Cajun Country and presents it with a
startling edgy view. Do read this one!
"Fiddle Fever" by Sharon Arms Doucet
Great read for that 4th grader and up! In the same reading level as the
Little House on the Prarie Books..very cute and the kids will love it.
This should be required reading for the upper elementary school grades!
